ABOUT THE RAMP

Glenelg boat ramp is a popular metropolitan boat ramp largely because of it's central coastal location and access to many good fishing grounds and may be used by boats of all sizes. I think I speak for all Ex-Glenelg fisherman and current ones too,  when I say congratulations to those who made this new ramp possible and by doing so adding a new dimension to fishing in South Australia by creating the third 5 star boat ramp for all enjoy.

GLENELG FOUR MILE GROUNDS A FISH HAVEN

For the armada of Adelaide boat owners who have bought craft primarily for fishing, knowing where to catch a feed is a frequent complaint heightened by a relatively poor summer season.   Garfish have been prominent on the Four Mile Grounds off Glenelg all summer and with limited time left before cooler autumn weather moves in to disperse schools, this is still the place to head for.   The location is bounded roughly due west of the Jetty Road and straight out from Holdfast Towers, a multi-storey block of flats on the North Glenelg esplanade, down from King Street Bridge.   Legendary grounds like Mac's, Towers, Milky's, The Middle, Northern and Southern Outer are situated in this area.   The seafloor consists of sand, broken shale bottom and low-lying limestone reef with ledges ranging from 1/2m - 2m at some spots. Water depth through the area changes from around 13m - 16m. Subtle bottom variation on a fish- finder indicate broken ground below and ought to be investigated.   Towers Ground, for example, was named from lining up the town hall clock tower on the old Congregation Church spire located on Jetty Road. Lining up the revolving restaurant on Anzac Highway with the southern TV mast on Mount Lofty will put boat owners in a productive area.  This Four Mile area has been supplemented with a tyre reef, along with a sunken barge and dredge over recent years. From April to early June, rugger snapper up to 4kg are frequent visitors around tidal changes which occur on dawn or dusk.   Small ledges running east-west are particularly good for small snapper at the beginning of ebb tides which start on sun -up or a fraction prior to or on sun-set. Early morning is excellent for large tommies before smaller fish take over as the sun rises higher.   Lightly broken bottom scattered right through the area often holds pods of 36cm-plus whiting as a bonus.
